3344 Star Trek

On this day we learned about the importance of communication. After watching the Star Trek episode I learned how communication plays in our life, not only in the classroom but out in the real world as well. This Episode highlighted how one person strives so much to understand the language of another person. At the end of the episode we learn that the Alien creature sacrificed his life to save another human being. The communication barrier was a big role in this episode. After all, we should try to incorporate how well communication will play in our life. Children come from many different backgrounds, each of these backgrounds show how communication can be so different than each other.

Presentations!
Wow! My group ended up going first. It was really scary for me but my group and I did a great job. I was very happy on the outcome as well. The class seemed to enjoy it as well. By looking at the other comments from other blogs I see everyone else agrees with me.
Group 2 did a great job as well. They involved the class group in recycling. They did an amazing job on the show that they gave. I'm surprised on how advanced technology has gone. They were able to make a great advanced PowerPoint. I've learned a lot from this group and hopefully I can gain knowledge from the future presentations coming up.

HOW TO DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY AND NEVER BE FOUND
by Sara Nickerson
Ages 10-up
This is a mysterious book that is great for children ages 10 and up.

"Margaret's father has been dead four years. He was a champion swimmer who drowned. Now Margaret's mother chain smokes, bites her fingernails, and sleeps all weekend --- every weekend. Margaret and her little sister Sophie know that they can't mention their father."
Different suspense happens in this book. What is with the island and the mother?

Let's Go!: The Story of Getting from There to Here by Lizann Flatt and illustrated by Scot Ritchie
This story tells about transportation from the Ice Age to today and beyond. Through this book we see the first travelers who migrate to North America on foot carrying backpacks and pulling their possessions in travois. We see European ships arriving carrying horses which become a major mode of transportation for quite some time. We see the invention of the steam engine, trains, streetcars, cars, and airplanes. How will we get around in the future? Flatt poses this question in the end. Will space travel become as common as automobile travel?

This website gives great information on different children's books. As you look through this websitde you will find new and interesting things!

3321 Read aloud Video

Read aloud video was great to watch.
You really are reminded of the different books you read as a child growing up. Reading aloud to children is the most single most important thing to do to a child. It also builds their reading vocabulary throughout their life. As you read to a child, it will continue to build with them and will become a daily routine. By having your students engaged in a reading aloud, they will all gain a lot from the experience. As teachers, giving that little extra enthusiasm will influence a child in reading!

3344 Expository (MPG) Visual Aids

My topic is chronology. For my visual aids I will use sentence strips. These strips will show the correct sequence in which the order of events will occur. Students will be able to pick up and place these sentences in a teacher chart or own journal. Target Audience will be 3rd grade. This chart will also identify the plot, climax, etc.

This book can make children fear vampires! This book talks about how a wonderful vampire is a vegetarian. He loves candy and is scare of children. After reading this book, children may overcome their fears on scary monsters and learn to accept new friends as well.
This book of course is a parody of Goodnight Moon. Children and Parents who are familiar with Good Night Moon will fall in love with this little ware wolf who goes through many different rhymes as well.

This book is a Find And Seek type of book. This book is written from the "I Spy" author. Through each page, children will look for different objects hidden around the pages.

Stiletto Stoners 3344

How can such a successful person be addicted to marijuana? After watching the video on stiletto stoners, I was surprised to find out how many executives and high power individuals were addicted. When children look up to these high powered people, what will they think when they find out? Is marijuana the key to success? No it is not. By challenging yourself and studying hard you can accomplish anything without the use of drugs. Children who look up to these people will become confused on the right path to go. We must become the perfect model to these children and show them how to become "successful".

Author Profile/ Chapter 7
Chapter 7 talked about the importance of picture books. Picture books are very helpful because they give books the extra icing on the cake. PICTURE BOOKS ARE INTENDED FOR EVERYONE. That is one thing Ms. Pickett pointed out, picture books can be used on all grades even in high school.

If You Give a Mouse A Cookie by Laura Numeroff
We have all heard of this story over and over. I thought this would be an excellent choice for a picture book because of the great details that are givin on each page. This type of story is read to younger children. While reading the book, together as a class you can make predictions on what will happen next.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
This in another story we are all familiar with. This story shows great pictures and even shows where the caterpillar has ate on the page itself. The book shows various meals the caterpillar eats. Through several days, children will be able to identify with food the caterpillar has ate.

Ferocious Wild Beasts!
Jack is lost in the forest—a forest that his mom has told him is full of ferocious wild beasts! But the creatures that Jack meets there seem perfectly friendly to him, even if they are a bit worried about the ferocious wild beasts he’s been telling them about . . .

But then they hear a terrible roar Who can it be?

Narrative
A narrative is a type of writing that is used to tell stories.Writing a narrative can be difficult. This type of writing needs to have a beginning, middle, and end.
A narrative is a piece of writing that consist of a basic story elements. These elements are characters, setting, and plot. Characters are the specific people in the story who play important roles. Having a beginning, middle, and end to your writing is also important because this will help your story make a lot of sense. Using setting in your writing gives information on when and where your story takes place. A plot is most necessary when writing a narrative. A plot consists of a conflict, rising action and climax. Rising action and climax is the high point of the story. This highpoint is when the most exciting part of the story takes places. After this part of the story happens the down fall or conclusion is then written. The down fall of the story is when everything is brought into consluion( a resting stop).

MPG Purpose
I decided to use chronology for my MGP. I thought this learning object was great for students to learn.
Chronology helps students understand the important parts of stories that they are reading and it also helps them identify part developments of the story. Learning the importance of chronology is crucial to children who lack reading comprehension. During reading exercises, students can identify parts of a book such as the beginning, middle, end, climax, etc. Learning these types of purposes in a book allows the student to understand the story and what role it will play for further reading. You can allow students to cut and paste sentences in the correct sequence. Students will eventually learn how to correctly identify main ideas and key terms of chronology as well.

Author Profile/ Chapter 6
Chapter six talked about the importance of traditional literature. This type of literature is from the perspective of different cultures. Growing up as a child, I remember so many stories I’ve heard. Little did I know, these types of stories are traditional stories which are from my cultural beliefs from my family. These types of stories are usually told to explain the orgin of things, to teach values, explor human consciousness, and to entertain,

I saw this on another blog and thought I should use it to since I’m so familiar with this author. Mercer Mayer, who is most known from his books, "Little Critter", is an excellent author who incorporates friendship and manners into his books to teach to the young ones. This website http://www.littlecritter.com, gives a list on what books he has wrote including many different activities.

Memories.
Today in class we were to bring five different objects that significantly have impacted us in some type of way. In one of the objects that I brought was a water gun. This object represented a laughing memory. When I was a younger child, my brother and neighbors would have a water balloon fights. We would all play until it would get dark. Of course when it was dark it would be freezing outside and we were all cold. This one time we all forgot to get the towels from inside. If it was cold outside of course it would be even colder inside. Of course being the youngest one there, I would always be the victim. They would always threaten me to go inside to the the towels unless I would get the last water balloon thrown on me. I remember being so cold running inside out the house. Even this memory sounds lame, I still think about how something cruel can be so funny.

Author Profile!

For this author profile, I decided to write about book that i've read in the past.. Some of the book I rememeber reading were Arthur books. One book such as, Arthur In A Pickle. This book is great for the little ones. It talks about how telling a lie can be wrong. In this story Arthur dreams about how one little lie can become into a bigger one than before. He starts to dream about how this lie made him suffer so much on "pickle jail".

This next book talks about Arthur losing his best friend bust. This book can help students feel comfortable when their best friend moves to another school. It talks about jealousy can take place and how a mistake that the mail man made can effect a whole day.

Arthur and the School Pet
During Christmas vacation week, D.W. volunteers to take the classroom pet gerbil, Speedy, home for the holidays. D.W. plans to teach him some new tricks to show her class, but soon learns that taking care of a gerbil isn’t as easy as she thinks, especially one as quick as Speedy

Personal writing and elaboration blog
Personal writing is something I considered myself not to do often, but during class I didn't realize how much I actually did. Text messaging, notes, blogs, grocery list, email, letter, etc. I was a victim of contributing to all of these types of personal writing. The type of personal writing i contribute most in is text messaging. I believe text messaging has grown so much. I know everyone is using it today. Text messaging is a great way to send quick and easy message to your friends, family, or classmates. A text message is great because you can get the message quick.
Today in class we created mini puppets out of construction paper. These were unique puppets in which we created by ourselves. We had almost any character to portray. I created a Doctor puppet. This character could represent me in several different ways. I am a helpful person. How can I describe this in a unique form? I am a helpful person because I help almost anyone is in need. Either if it is a child or an adult I will give an extra hand. This doctor is a representation of me because a doctor is a multitalented individual. He is responsible for certain tasks and is looked upon for help from different people all the time. Becoming stressed out is not an excuse while performing these task. When being a helpful person I must show great attitude. Giving mixed signals to any person will be rude. These are some of the characteristics I will need to show when I am with my children. When I am a future teacher I will need to connect these characteristics I made with my doctor puppet with myself with children. Being a helpful will set a bright future for many students.

Writing is a process!! In class we learned writing is a process. We repeated that sentence several times to where it was stuck in all of our heads. There are five steps in this process that we must follow to ensure a proper writing process. The first step is pre-writing. Pre-writing is the step in which you organize your thoughts. You can help your students doing this by giving a story map. For example, a narrative consist of story, plot, who, what, when, and why. These are some things that can lead to further elaboration. The next step is drafting. The drafting is a sloppy rough copy. This part of the process you will focus more on content. After drafting comes revising. In this part you will change, add, or delete sentences, content and ideas. The fourth step is editing. You will make and final changes to the paper. Last but not least is publishing. This part of the paper will be final. Dr. Harris gave us a great example of using a hamburger. We start with the bun, in this bun we give positive thought about the work. Next is the meat, tomatoes, etc. We give constructive criticism in which the student can revise/edit the paper. Then the bun comes again in which we give another compliment.

Understanding what we read: COMPREHENSION, vocabulary, and discussion.

This Part of our notes helped us understand how we can apply comprehension into the classroom. Our main goal is comprehension and applying to knowledge to our schema.Although pretty much everything to this chapter I enjoyed, there were a couple of thing that I appreciated more. Such as, learning the goals of reading comprehension instruction; as future educators we must learn and continue to make judgments to know what our students need (notes). I like to learn how to improve a student’s thinking in reading such as using a structured reading in the classroom. In the notes, I learned that this method works best with struggling readers. I agreed with everything in the notes for this chapter. It’s hard to apply these methods in the classroom with such little experience but once I am conducting my field base hours I will get better with experience.

We are all familiar with the move “Jumanji”, but I thought it would be very interesting to read in the classroom. This book is great for grades 1st and up. Written by Chris Van Allsburg, this books talks about the children finding this weird board game and how it came about into their life. Once they start playing the game they must finish. It will also give each student a wild imagination on every single exciting event that takes place in this book. According to this website, it gives you a lot of activities to do in the classroom and things to take into notice while reading to the classroom. http://www.carolhurst.com/titles/jumanji.html

Another book that we are familiar with is the book called "Charlotte's Web." This is an American favorite. As you read this book, children will fall in love with all the characters only learning to find out the death of a real hero. This book is great for grades three and up. It might be difficult for some children to read. However, some of the older grades can handle it well. http://www.carolhurst.com/titles/charlottesweb.html. On this website, it gives a lot of great activities for the children.

In this book called "BOBBY VS. GIRLS" by Lisa Yee, talks about a battle between boys verses girls in a class. Although they are only fourth graders, one of the boys still wonders if he will ever be friends with a particular girl in the girls side. It talks a lot about crazy situation the main character goes through. This book is great for ages 9-12 and has 160. This book can be a little challenging for younger kids but is still a humerus book. I received information from this book on this website http://www.kidsreads.com/reviews/9780545055925.asp.

Another book review I found helpful was this book called "Billy Bones: The Road to Nevermore" written by Christopher Lincon. This book is good for any child who like to read adventure book. Basically this book is about a boy who loses his loved ones in a terr able accident. While reading this book you will try to find out how the little boy will find where is loved ones are captured at. This book is made for the ages between 8-12. I found this book on this website, http://www.kidsreads.com/features/cool-new-books.asp

In class we talked a lot about diversity. Diversity is a subject in which children should learn to accept all children no matter how they look or act. Stereotypes can be another problems in which many individuals go through today. We should all learn to accept all students.

You're Lovable to Me
The tale of multigenerational love, repentant bunnies apologize to their mama for the day’s shenanigans. Mama Bunny gathers her children together and reassures them that she will always love them.Old-fashioned illustrations and a gentle rhyme will endear readers to this bedtime picture book that has the making of a love-classic

Today in class we read “When You Give Pig A Pancake”, which was basically about a pig wanting a pancake and then wanting more after that. This book is a great example of how a circular story is used. A circular story is a story in which the beginning of the book eventually ends back to where it had originally started. This book started out with a pig wanting a pancake and then ending with a pig wanting a pancake again. You can use this in the classroom by teaming up students into different groups. Each group will receive an index card, on this index card it will show them what part of the book they received. They will try to put themselves into the correct order in which it occurred. From beginning to end, each group will eventually find is way in order by asking each student different questions. Making reading fun can be tough but it can be worked on. In class we blew bubbles which were fun to us, and imagine how fun it will be when the children blow it. Dr. Harris also gave us the idea to make a “book box”. Inside this box will be a book with 5 different items. One by one we will take out each item and show to the class. We then pass around each item and ask the kids what the book will be about. At the end of this we will show what book we will be reading. These are some ways I learned in class on how to make reading fun.

I found this children's literature website to be helpful http://www.kidsreads.com/authors/authors.asp. It showed many different books to look at and also gave a brief explanation on some of the books as well. There is even a list of what book have been turned into movies.

http://www.kidsreads.com/authors/authors.asp. This website offered the same as well, but had a list of themes to choose from. Such as Christmas, Halloween, etc. I thought this was very helpful because during the holidays you can teach your students and help them relate to the book as well as the holidays.

www.randomhouse.com allows viewers to search different websites. This website is great for individual who are looking foer mini series of different books. As you go through this website you will find many books that you have not seen since you wre a child!

In my intelligence profile, I learn best in the intrapersonal style. This type of style is independent and is also more focusing on my own thinking. I learn best in this style because I analyze my own ideas a lot. I have many goals that I would like to accomplish in my life. I keep a check list on my mind on what I want to become and how I will complete them.
There are many things that motivate me in my life. Sometimes I sit down and think on my past. During this time I see how it reflects on myself and how it motivates me as an individual today. Majority of the things that influence me today are the students that I am with. I work at an elementary school and I always have numerous students who tell me stories of what happened in their life. I always strive to be some type a role model in their eyes because if I am that “role model”, I will be able to motivate them in some sort of way. Either if I motivate them to do their homework or read a little bit extra, I will feel closer to fulfilling myself. I feel motivating a child can be difficult sometimes but I learn how to improve every day. Motivating a child motivates me to accomplish my goals on my checklist.
